Topic: Psychological research has mapped out four universal defensive strategies that all kinds of people use when feeling fearful. While each individual will have a tendency to use one over the others, all people are capable of all four defensive strategies depending on the specific circumstances. When we understand what defensiveness is, how it manifests and what the root cause is, we can begin to see the very same strategies show up with our horses when fear is part of the picture. The four strategies are: fight – flight – freeze – and – fawn. We take a look at each one in this podcast, how to recognize each one nonverbally and how to work with counterbalances in order to work through fear issues and remain safe in the process.
